1. What is the book about as a whole?
It's a book on philosophy and physics. The main argument is that humans are universal explainers and universal constructors. In other words, humans have the capacity both to acquire and apply unbounded knowledge.
2. What is being said in detail, and how?
The book is roughly divided into the following sections:
1. Theory - there are different ways of marrying theory and experience. Deutsch argues that theories can't be grounded purely on experience as all experience is a conjecture in our minds. A bad (parochial, small-world) theory can explain anything through being varied. A good theory can't be easily varied.
2. People are capable of creating knowledge and that's unique and meaningful. Knowledge can be created in biological organisms through evolution - but people can acquire it through explicit thought. Deutsch rejects the "principle of mediocrity" (people are insignificant on the grand scale of the cosmos) or "spaceship earth" (that our life is only possible on the delicate balance of Earth).
3. Reach - a theory can have universal "reach" - reaching much beyond the intended scope of the theory. The best theories are universal in their domain.
4. Infinity - there are more than one infinity. The Hilbert's infinity hotel shows it - some infinite sets are contained in others and some infinities are larger than others.
5. Optimism principle - all evils are caused by lack of sufficient knowledge
6. Many worlds - a theory that explains the phenomena of quantum entanglement and interference literally. There is the multiverse and there is a distribution of universes within the multiverse. Quantum measurements are observed in one instance - but that instance is affected by interfering universes in the multiverse.
7. Popper's criterion - good political institutions make it easy to depose a bad ruler. The case against proportional system vs first-past-the-post - you can't hold any single party accountable for bad decisions when the decisions are made in coalition.
8. Beauty - there is such a thing as universal beauty - as well as local beauty. Flowers are an example of universal beauty - and they have evolved signals across species to approximate the universal standard of beauty.
9. Culture / meme (a piece of culture) - memes evolve much faster in a population. A meme is a thought or action shared by a popularion. Memes compete and dominate each other out of extiction. "Rational" memes dominate by out-competing the ones that make for a worse explanation. "Anti-rational" memes dominate by not allowing for explanation
10. Creativity is something unique to humans. The author makes a case that it probably evolved to replicate memes. A "meme" exists in a person's head and is expressed in their actions. Creativity evolved so that another person can conjecture what's in someone else's head based on their observed actions.
11. People often make the mistake of observing the current world and making predictions about the future. They extrapolate current trends but can't account for future reativity and discoveries. Such predictions are usually vastly wrong, time and time again - the future moves, and that's the only thing that's certain. We can't predict future knowledge.
3. Is the book true, in whole or part?
People undeniably have the ability to acquire much more knowledge than currently available. New problems will arise and get solved - ad infinitum. Acquiring infinite knowledge is not possible - there is always a new problem arising at each theory. I agree that people are indeed universal explainers and constructors and I agree on the case rejecting the principle of mediocrity and spaceship earth. I must say that I didn't have strong opinions on the philosophy prior to reading the book.
4. What of it?
I'm impressed by the conjecture that creativity arose from the need to decode memes. This is a genuine new insight for me and has implications in the development of AI. Namely, having the ability to predict the internals of a system that is only observed externally. This shows why next-token prediction is indeed so powerful - and that's a reach the book didn't intend as Deutsch didn't know about LLMs at the time of writing the book.
I now have a better understanding of the Many Worlds interpretation. It's basically an attempt to explain how come quantum interference disappears and reappears when conducting targeted observations. In short, when detecting the path of a particle (causing decoherence), interference patterns disappear. When shooting a single particle without detecting its path, an interference pattern emerges.
